umami

Well … technically, I think it’s really more of an umami taste than an umami flavor. So what is umami? Well … I have both a simple and complicated answer for you. First the simple. Until I started writing this article, I was unaware that umami has its own taste sensors, just like the other tastes. So in simple terms, it is a taste that is picked up by certain areas of the tongue. If you’re interested in the complicated, you can find out all about it in this wiki article.

Is there a way to add this umami taste to our dishes?

Of course, and I’ve found an outstanding article on the subject. I couldn’t have said it any better, so I won’t waste my time.

Up next time is the taste that’s not technically a taste: spicy.
